Top Leadership Team in Healthcare by HealthLeaders Media
July 17, 2008 — Just staying open is a challenge for many hospitals in rural America. To be able to grow and become a regional contributor of care is an accomplishment that has earned the leadership team at Lakewood Health System of Staples, Minnesota the honor as the 2008 Top Leadership Team in Healthcare for small hospitals by HealthLeaders Media.
The HealthLeaders Media Top Leadership Teams in Healthcare 2008 program, sponsored by Cejka Search, CIT, HealthGrades and Pershing Yoakley & Associates, is designed to celebrate the outstanding teamwork that occurs in healthcare organizations each day, to share what makes top leadership teams successful, and to encourage other healthcare leaders to learn more from the best practices of top leadership teams. Winners are judged on the leadership team’s overall leadership culture, their ability to overcome challenges, and their ability to demonstrate successes that result from outstanding leadership teamwork. Only one winner per category receives this national honor each year.
Lakewood Health System has grown from a small community hospital to an independent, integrated, regional health network providing a full continuum of services that includes a 25-bed hospital, an attached clinic, 22 medical providers with four satellite clinics, a 100-bed care center, a 40-apartment senior housing unit, a 27-apartment assisted living unit and a senior behavioral health unit. Under the direction of CEO Tim Rice, the leadership also took a patient-centered approach to the design and construction of a new $42 million facility that opened in 2006. In order to reach benchmarks for construction of the new facility, the leadership team had to increase new income by 300% to ensure long-term financial viability in an economically challenged area.
“Not only was I impressed by the leadership culture, but I was amazed at the aggressiveness with which this team is advancing healthcare for its community,” says Top Leadership Teams judge Colleen Meza, CEO of Clearwater Valley Hospital & Clinics/St. Mary’s Hospital & Clinic in Orofino, Idaho. “The region around the town of Staples is truly fortunate to have healthcare being delivered by Tim Rice and his team.”
“Our leadership team has tirelessly focused on developing a trusting relationship with board members, physicians and employees,” explains Tim Rice, CEO of Lakewood Health System and an integral part of the award-winning leadership team. “These efforts have created a culture that has allowed us to focus our energies on the anticipation and delivery of exceptional care to our customers and communities we serve.”
Other winners in the 2008 Top Leadership Teams in Healthcare program include Scripps Health in San Diego, for large hospitals and health systems; Griffin Hospital in Derby, Conn., for community and mid-size hospitals; Bangkok Hospital Medical Center in Thailand for Global Hospitals; HealthTexas Provider Network in Dallas, Texas, for medical group practices, and CareSource Management Group in Dayton, Ohio, for health plans.
HealthLeaders Media Editor-in-Chief Jim Molpus says the 2008 Top Leadership Teams share a commitment to make their leaders mutually accountable for reaching high measures in areas from patient satisfaction to financial performance. “Healthcare is moving toward an era where transparent results will become increasing crucial for survival,” Molpus says. “Those leadership teams who are already preparing for the era in their own culture will have an advantage in the times ahead.”
The 2008 honorees of the Top Leadership Teams in Healthcare will be featured speakers at the annual Top Leadership Teams in Healthcare Conference and Awards, to be held Oct. 16-17 at The Drake Hotel in Chicago. Along with the winners, more than 40 healthcare chief executives and team members will share their secrets of teamwork success in focus areas including financial strategy, quality improvement, technology and physician relations. “Highways for Hospice” Motorcycle Rally a Success
May 27, 2008—Lakewood Health System’s second annual “Highways for Hospice” charity motorcycle rally lead 79 motorcycles and over 100 riders throughout the Lakewood Health System service area on Saturday, May 17th. The 88-mile ride brought in a significant amount of funds for the Lakewood Health System Foundation's Hospice Fund. Funds raised will be used to help provide care, equipment and supplies for hospice patients and families as well as afford continuing hospice staff education and hospice support groups.
“The support given to our hospice program during “Highways for Hospice” is just so heartwarming,” said Wendy Brichacek, Hospice Licensed Social Worker at Lakewood Health System. “If it wasn’t for the generous donations hospice has received throughout the years from our communities, we wouldn’t be able to serve our communities the way we love to.”
Medicare and insurances do not cover the entire cost of hospice services. Therefore memorials, donations and fundraising efforts such as "Highways for Hospice" are vital for hospice to continue.

Rapid Response and Lifetime Care for Cardiac Patients
February 22, 2008—Physicians and staff of Lakewood Health System provide rapid diagnosis and transfer of patients having myocardial infarctions, otherwise known as heart attacks.
“Every minute counts in cardiac care,” said Connie Wells, Emergency Room Supervisor at Lakewood Health System. Studies show that any delay in opening a blocked artery can increase the amount of damage to the heart muscle and increases the risk of death.
When a patient arrives at Lakewood Health System with symptoms consistent with a heart attack, an electrocardiography (EKG) is obtained immediately to confirm the diagnosis. At that moment, the emergency room staff at Lakewood Health System can act promptly, by identifying ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a nationally mandated plan of action for cardiac emergency patients. “Rapid assessment and rapid intervention is pertinent in minimizing heart damage,” said Wells, “For each cardiac patient coming into ER, our goal is to get them in and out within 30 minutes.” After STEMI is identified, the patient is transferred and directly admitted to the nearest cardiac catheterization laboratory; St. Cloud.
Any patients transferred to the nearest cardiac catheterization laboratory is directly referred back to their local physician at Lakewood Health System. From the moment a patient experiences a myocardial infarction, Lakewood Health System coordinates the patient’s care—from assessment, intervention, transfer, and treatment to education, medication management, and life-long health. Lakewood Health System will walk a patient through every step of the way, making sure they get well and stay well.
Lakewood Health System has a cardiologist available by appointment every Monday, while emergency staff is prepared and equipped for myocardial infarction emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
For more information about Lakewood Health System’s cardiac care unit, please contact Laurie Bach at (218) 894-8611.

Lakewood Health System Presents the “Medical Home”
January 25, 2008—Lakewood Health System is introducing a new, innovative outlook for healthcare. The “Medical Home,” as defined by Lakewood Health System, is a new way of providing medical care that is more proactive, rather than waiting until a patient is sick to be seen. Medical Home patients are identified by the facility by reviewing factors such as multiple medications, multiple illnesses or unstable illnesses. There is no additional cost for the patient or their insurer to be part of the Medical Home.
In accordance with this innovative model, a patient’s care at Lakewood Health System is fully coordinated to include reminders, extra education and regular contact with their Medical Home doctor and nurse to ensure they have receive customized, proactive care.
If you are a patient at Lakewood Health System and qualify for joining the Medical Home, you will be notified by your doctor. If you would like to become part of this group of patients, let your doctor know.

“Our starting point is to look at the products and services for Women’s Health that we currently offer and find ways to increase or enhance these services; from there, the new programming and service possibilities are endless,” Varilek said. Overall visioning and direction of the Women’s Health Focus is guided by a larger Women’s Health Steering Committee made up of health professionals from across the Lakewood Health System organization.
