According to a recent study, 71% of Americans have thought about their end-of-life preferences. However, only 29% of those Americans have completed a healthcare directive, or living will, indicating these preferences. April 16 is National Healthcare Decisions Day, and to recognize the importance of that day and what it means, Lakewood Health System will be hosting two informational sessions to talk about the importance of having a healthcare directive.

These sessions will take place on Thursday, April 16 at 12:00 and 5:00 p.m. in the lower level classrooms at Lakewood’s main campus. During each session, John Makosky will speak about the importance of having a healthcare directive during the unexpected illness and death of his wife, Dr. Sheila Froemming. After which, Kyle Tamminga, Rural Physician Associate Program (RPAP) medical student will walk attendees through each section of the healthcare directive form. Lakewood staff will be available throughout each session to answer questions, and help complete and notarize directive forms.

RSVPs are encouraged, but not mandatory for attendance. Go to www.lakewoodhealthsystem.com and click on EVENTS to register. Healthcare directives are available at any time, and if you’d like to fill one out prior to the sessions, please contact Samantha at 218-894-8382 or samanthapommier@lakewoodhealthsystem.com for more information, or with questions.
