Trauma Care

Lakewood Health System’s Emergency Department (ED) is a designated Level III Trauma Center. The Trauma III structure provides all staff including physicians, physician extenders, nurses, and admitting staff with the most efficient plan for better patient care and outcomes. Lakewood is proud to be able to provide surgery services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All RNs in the ED are certified by the Trauma Nursing Core Course, and surgeon and ED physicians and APCs who work in the ED are Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) or Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS) trained.

With the Trauma III designation, Lakewood can effectively stabilize, treat, admit or transfer patients with serious injuries, such as solid organ injuries, fractures, traumatic brain injuries and multi-system injuries. Through communication with our surgeon and an on-call specialist using digital x-ray images, Lakewood is better equipped to treat patients on-site in Staples or make the decision to transfer, based on injury severity. What this means for patients is faster care, a more developed team of trauma professionals and better patient outcomes.
