Geriatrics

As we age, certain things in life aren’t as easy as they once were. We may find it more difficult to go about our daily tasks, health issues arise and we need to learn how to incorporate them into our lives, or we just aren’t as confident with ourselves and the things we’ve always been able to do. Those of an older age also often have two or more medical issues, such as Alzheimer’s, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure, which can make it very complicated and difficult to determine necessary care and treatment options. For this reason, geriatrics is a specialty that focuses on the medical care of adults 65 years of age and older.

A geriatrician is an internist or family medicine physician who has received additional years of training and certification in geriatrics. These specially-training physicians can provide care and treatment for those elderly patients who require more advanced knowledge. While we often associate advancing age with the need for increased physical care, social, emotional and mental issues can also become common. A geriatrician has the skills needed to address all these issues, in order to improve the health and wellness of the aging population.
