A midwife’s training and education involves special expertise in assisting women in maintaining a healthy pregnancy and in providing support during labor and delivery. Midwives also provide primary healthcare to women throughout their lifespan, not just during their childbearing years.
Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are licensed and educated in both nursing and midwifery. CNMs have graduate degrees in the clinical specialty of nurse-midwifery; they have passed a national examination and are certified to practice midwifery in the U.S. They also maintain a registered nursing license in the state in which they practice.
Midwives can perform comprehensive physical examinations, prescribe medications (including contraceptive methods), and order laboratory and other diagnostic tests. At Lakewood, our certified nurse-midwife works in partnership with our family practice physicians and OB GYNs. She attends to a woman’s physical, psychological, and social well-being and provides individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, along with continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery and postpartum support.
