Taking care of your health shouldn’t be confusing. That’s why Lakewood Health System makes it easy to schedule your mammogram—and even easier to know what to expect when you arrive.
Whether it’s your first mammogram or just time for your annual screening, here’s a simple guide to getting started.
Step 1: Talk to Your Provider or Call Us Directly
You can schedule a Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam with SmartCurve™ technology in one of two ways:
- Ask your Lakewood provider during a routine visit.
- Call our scheduling team directly at 218-894-8465.
If you’re age 40 or older and don’t have any current breast symptoms, you do not need a referral to schedule a screening mammogram.
Step 2: Choose a Time That Works for You
We offer flexible appointment times at our Staples campus. When you call, our staff will work with you to find a day and time that fits your schedule. Most mammograms take 20 minutes or less from check-in to completion.
Step 3: Day of Your Appointment
Here’s what to expect when you arrive for your screening:
- Check in at the Main Entrance at Lakewood’s Main Campus in Staples.
- Wear a two-piece outfit, as you’ll only need to remove your top for the exam.
- Avoid wearing deodorant, powders, or lotions near your chest or underarms—these can interfere with image quality.
Once checked in, you’ll be greeted by our friendly imaging team and offered a soft, comfortable robe to change into. Then you’ll be escorted to our Mammography Suite—a warm, private space designed to help you feel at ease. With soft lighting, calming colors, and a welcoming environment, it’s our way of making what can feel like a stressful experience more relaxed and reassuring.
Before your exam begins, one of our experienced technologists will walk you through the entire process, answer any questions, and make sure you feel as comfortable as possible.
During the exam, we’ll use SmartCurve™ technology, which features a curved compression surface that mirrors the natural shape of your breast. This innovative design helps reduce pinching and pressure, offering a more comfortable experience without sacrificing image clarity or exam time.
Most mammogram appointments take about 20 minutes, and you'll be able to return to your day with peace of mind, knowing you’re taking proactive steps for your health.
Step 4: After Your Exam
A board-certified radiologist will review your images and send results to you and your provider—usually within just a few days. If follow-up is needed, our team will guide you through the next steps.
You’re in Good Hands
At Lakewood, we combine advanced technology with compassionate care to make your mammogram as easy, comfortable, and reassuring as possible.
