Aug. 16, 2024: Lakewood Health System welcomed U.S. Senator Tina Smith for a visit on Wednesday, August 14. The senator and members of her staff met with several members of the Lakewood administrative and provider teams to learn about Lakewood and what it means to provide healthcare in rural Minnesota.
The senator was specifically interested in talking about the nearly $750,000 federal grant Lakewood recently received through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to fund a new family medicine residency with enhanced obstetrical training. Lakewood is collaborating with the University of Minnesota to create the residency program which will provide support, training and recruitment for doctors focused on care in rural communities.
Also joining the conversation was Dr. Shailey Prasad, Associate Vice President for Global and Rural Health at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Prasad is a primary collaborator in the development of Lakewood’s residency program and has been instrumental in creating similar residency programs throughout the state. The residency program is in the beginning stages and more information will be shared as things progress.
