Dec. 19, 2025: Lakewood Health System was honored to celebrate Dr. Jay Lenz, general surgeon and U.S. Navy veteran, at a surprise gathering on Wednesday, December 10th, when he became one of six recipients across the Midwest to receive the 2025 Scheels Hometown Heroes Award.
David Morris from American Heroes Outdoors was on-hand to present the award to Dr. Lenz, as he was surrounded by coworkers and family who filled the hallway and cafeteria area at Lakewood to witness the award presentation.
Dr. Lenz was nominated by Matt Krebsbach of Brainerd, a longtime patient, fellow veteran, and friend who credits Dr. Lenz with saving his life five years ago. As part of his nomination, Krebsbach shared, “His [Dr. Lenz’s] service to our nation, his profound impact on individual lives, his commitment to mentorship, and his unwavering dedication to his community set him apart as an exemplary person,” adding, “Dr. Lenz is not just a surgeon. He is a true servant leader whose pride and professionalism shine brightly in everything he does.”
When given the opportunity to share some thoughts, Dr. Lenz said, “I think to be a good team, you have to be a good teammate. And I think we’ve got a whole bunch of great teammates, making this a wonderful team. And that’s what makes Lakewood so special. Thank you very much for the award. I very much appreciate it. I’m not sure I deserve it, but thank you very much. Thank you all.”
A native of Coon Rapids, Minn., Dr. Lenz served in the U.S. Navy from 1982–1996, demonstrating skill and courage as a surgeon in challenging, high-stakes environments. His military service laid the foundation for a medical career defined by compassion, integrity and dedication.
The Scheels Hometown Heroes Award, presented in partnership with American Heroes Outdoors, honors service members and first responders who have dedicated their lives to serving our nation and who continue to make a meaningful impact in their communities. Out of 78 nominations, only 6 individuals were selected this year throughout the Midwest.
